Dan Gable, a wrestling legend by any standards, but especially revered in the Hawkeye State, spoke Thursday night at a benefit dinner for the Riverview Center. Gable was an Olympic gold medalist at the 1972 Munich Games and the winningest coach in college wrestling history. However, he wasn’t talking about wrestling on Thursday night. He spoke about a personal tragedy and how violence impacted his life. He spoke about the rape and murder of his older sister Diane when he was a teenager almost 46 years ago. He spoke about the devastating impact it had on his family. He spoke about many topics, including the importance of the Riverview Center and victim services. However, he emphasized the importance of prevention efforts. “It’s all about prevention. It’s about keeping this — what happened to my family — from happening to others.” You can access the original article here.

Our thanks go out to Dan for having the courage to share his experiences and pain. He sets a great example by talking about his experiences and how violence has affected his life. It is another reminder that violence can happen to anyone. Dan provided us with a great example of what men in our community have to gain by getting active in regards to domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. Not only can you make the community safer for yourself and the people you love, but you may also be able to prevent it from happening to someone else.
